A message from SANTA CLARA USD

Attention Families and Students,

We were informed today that the new HAWK pedestrian beacons on Monroe Street, in front of Wilcox High School, will be turned on by the City of Santa Clara tonight. This is a huge improvement in student safety, but may slow down traffic flow as the community gets used to the new traffic conditions. Wilcox High School administrators will be at the beacons on Thursday, December 21 at 7:30 a.m. and at the 12:20 p.m. release time to teach students how to properly use the beacons. We would like to strongly encourage any parent that drives their student to school to leave early. Construction is ongoing and Monroe will only be one lane both ways. We are anticipating heavy traffic in the morning and in the afternoon.

We are excited that the City has partnered with Santa Clara Unified School District to add this new safety feature for our students. Knowing how to approach the beacons is an important educational moment for the whole community since the HAWK lights are in several places around the City and often an unfamiliar type of traffic signal. The City of Santa Clara has prepared an educational video and educational flyer that will show both pedestrians and motorists how to approach the beacons.

Sincerely,

Santa Clara Unified School District

Dear Principal, Teachers and Parents,

Walden West Outdoor School will modify daily activities when necessary to compensate for poor air quality days. We closely monitor the Air Quality Index (AQI). Activities that are normally in outdoor areas may be moved indoors, we take frequent breaks and other activities will be modified to be less vigorous to limit physical activity. We monitor students who are sensitive to air pollution and take action as needed.

Please see the attached health advisory regarding the current air quality situation here in the Bay Area. We have received a number of phone calls from families regarding the smoke, and have been directing parents back to their school districts for information, announcements, and school closures.

Here are a few other resources you might find helpful:

I hope this helps! I know we have received lots of calls regarding the smoke.

Kindest Regards,

Marie Bobias Bacher

On August 21, skywatchers across the country will experience a solar eclipse. The eclipse begins at 9:01 a.m., the max eclipse is at 10:15 a.m., and the eclipse ends at 11:37 a.m. Below are some guidelines and resources to help you make this a safe, teachable moment for students and staff.

Take time to educate your students about what an eclipse is and how to view it safely. Follow the eclipse safety guidelines provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the American Astronomical Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Optometry, the American Optometric Association, and the National Science Foundation. Additional educational resources are available on NASA’s Eclipse 101 website.

Whether or not you and your class participate in an outdoor experience is up to each site, we only ask that you follow the NASA eclipse safety guidelines. If you would like to view the eclipse indoors with your students, you can watch the eclipse live at the Exploratorium website.

Additionally, parents and community members will receive these same guidelines and resources from the district over the next several days and which all point back to an Eclipse 101 article on our website. Sites and teachers are encouraged to share this same information with parents through your own communication channels.

Character Education:

Harper for Kids Youth Character Development Program

Bracher Elementary School is proud to partner with Harper for Kids to teach our students important character traits from legendary UCLA Coach John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success and his definition of success for children which is: “Success is happiness in your heart because you made the effort, 100%, to do your best!”

Coach Wooden believed and taught that the most important responsibility each of us had to ourselves was to do everything we could to achieve our own potential. He offered his Pyramid of Success and his definition of Success as a guide, stepping stones to help young people understand what it really takes to make the effort – 100% – to fulfill their potential and do their best.

Each month, our students will focus on one or two character traits from Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success. Positive examples of each character trait will be recognized with “Success Tickets” given by staff members. Classroom lessons will reinforce elements of the Pyramid of Success through readings of Coach Wooden’s children’s book,
Inch and Miles: The Journey to Success and other integrated activities. Additionally, whole school assemblies will feature character traits from Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success.

Harper for Kids is a children’s nonprofit organization founded by Tim & Peanut Louie Harper. Harper for Kids mission is to to teach children important life skills that will empower them to achieve their personal best in life and to help schools incorporate Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success into their character education.

We are excited about working with Harper for Kids to bring focused character education to our students. For more information about Harper for Kids and Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success, please visit their website: www.harperforkids.org/HFK/pyramid_of_success.html
